Erik Kessels
Swalmen, 1966
Erik Kessels presents his installation GroupShow in the Gashouder. Kessels is an artist, designer and curator with a special passion for photography. Among other things, he became known as a creative partner of the Amsterdam-based communication agency Kesselskramer. He published more than 60 books with photos he collected, and collaborated on his art projects with, among others, Marlene Dumas and Ryuichi Sakamoto. He recently exhibited in SFMOMA (San Francisco) with his installation 24HRS in Photos.
"GroupShow", 2018
GroupShow is an installation that shows an extensive collection of 'popular' vinyl records with large groups of people on the cover. Kessels is fascinated by the impossibility of photographing these choirs, regional ensembles and folklore bands and the typology of the photographs that result from them. The enormous volume and the collection of records resulted in an eclectic soundtrack and an installation that is a combination of the two. The work is a representation of the renaissance of images in which we live today and the abundance of impulses and information that flood us every day. It is also a celebration of like-minded beings who have found each other in their shared musical hobby.
