Bob Thissen
Hoensbroek, 1985
Bob Thissen is world famous among connaisseurs of Urban Exploring. Urban Exploring is the photographing of abandoned, usually not freely accessible buildings. Bob has visited many thousands of locations, from the tsunami and subsequent nuclear disaster to Fukushima to forgotten space shuttles located on a Russian active military site in Kazakhstan. He made photo and film images in more than 65 countries in forbidden locations; risks his life, freedom and health, but continues his passion. All major news and television stations now know where to find him for his incomparably intriguing images. His work is published by National Geographic and CNN, among others. A selection of his work can now be seen in Centre Ceramique: this is also the first time that his work has been exhibited.
Bob Thissen received his master animation film at the MAD in Genk. His graduation film "Nothing Beside Remains" (a stop-motion film made in abandoned buildings) was screened at many film festivals. Together with his former teacher Toon Loenders he devised and made the series "Exitus", that was broadcast in 2016 on NPO3 and Canvas (BE). In this series, Bob visits abandoned buildings worldwide and brings them to life by using stop motion. After the TV series, Bob fully devoted himself to become a full-time urban explorer.
